Instrumental
- Instrumentation: Viola and piano
- Written: 1988
- Dedicated to: Steven Barnett
- Audio
The first piece where what I think of as my voice really sounded out. Given its first performance in 1993 by Deborah Kemp.
Dislocations
- Instrumentation: Piano
- Written: 1994
- Audio
A short, and deliberately jarring piano piece. The title really sums up the approach, which is to establish a mosaic of fragments which fly around chaotically, the only repeating element being a nearly mindless ‘waltz’.
Violin Sonata
- Instrumentation: Violin and piano
- Written: 2008
- Dedicated to: Louise Cawte
- Score and audio excerpt (viewing / listening free; score available for purchase at $9.95)
This started life as a flute sonata, but I thought it worked rather well this way, especially as the soloist is playing almost continuously, which might have been tricky on a wind instrument.
Movement
- Instrumentation: Flute and piano
- Written: 2010
- Dedicated to: Louise Cawte
- Audio
Written to prove to Louise that I could write tonal music if I wanted to. It’s just that I don’t want to.
Recorder sonatina
- Instrumentation: Sopranino recorder and piano
- Written: 2010
- Score and audio excerpt (viewing / listening free; score available for purchase at $5.95)
A short but tempestuous work. The first movement is possibly the most aggressive thing I’ve ever done. Imagine Hindemith, but more so.

Hi Julian, This is Deborah Kemp who gave the first performance of your Viola Sonata in 1993. Fascinated to find all this online. Do drop me a line and let me know how the Sonata fared after this. Still a viola player, so interested in what else you have written for viola!
